DIY chicken tractor designsPoultry keeping has become one of the greatest activities among many egg and meat lovers today.

If you have some space in your backyard, erecting a chicken coop and a tractor (or ark) is one of the most prudent things as it will help you realize your dreams and enjoy the aforementioned products.

It is however important to consider building these structures on your own if you have the materials as this will save you a lot of money which would have otherwise been spent paying for the construction. There are many chicken ark blueprints which you should consider for DIY projects thus coming up with a great design which is easy to use and also spacious enough for your birds.

Building a Chicken Tractor Tips

When coming up with a good and functional ark, there are things that you must keep into consideration. These will help you to avoid unnecessary mistakes or require that you redo the work again. Below are some of the factors that you must consider:

Chicken tractors are meant to be mobile and therefore should not be too heavy. You will therefore have to shop around for materials that are light but also strong enough to keep away predators.

The number of birds to use the ark should be considered carefully to avoid overstuffing which could lead to stress and possible death. Consider the number of birds that are to use the chicken ark. The structure should also have sufficient ventilation to allow for proper air circulation which is highly important.

With these considerations in mind, the next thing will be to shop for suitable materials that will give you this kind of a structure. Remember you do not have to spend a lot of money for this unless you intend to. There are various things that you will need such as a wire mesh, pieces of timber or PVC pipes and nails among others. Making a list prior to the commencement of the shopping spree will be important as it will save you time and money.

Chicken Tractor Plans That Work

Chicken TractorThe first thing that you will need to consider is the size of your chicken structure.

Normally, birds are very unique and can easily get sick and unproductive if they are denied the necessary space.

And although it is advisable to have a tractor that can hold around 4 birds only, you should be able to determine the size of the structure that you want as long as it offers your bird enough space to easily move around.

You will also have to consider leaving sufficient space for food and water placement in addition to a place where the birds will be laying their eggs. The tractor must also be able to offer strong protection to your birds from both the predictors and elements.

Depending with the kind of predictors you have in your area, choose the wire mesh or chicken wire that is strong and cannot easily be broken down. You can have the roof divided into 2 allowing the birds to enjoy sunshine on one side and the other part sheltering them from rains.

It will be important to make the plan for your chicken ark early enough even before you start buying the materials. Make sure that the plan is easy to follow without complications as you build. Remember to build the floor in such a way that your chicken can easily access worms and other edible insects around the space where the tractor is placed.

Outdoor DIY chicken coop in the garden.
A backyard chicken coop is the ideal place for chicken to lay their eggs, nest, and sleep.

You can find pre-made coops in stores; however, a DIY coop is the best option if you have a limited backyard space.

You can also make the coop smaller or bigger depending on the size you need. Moreover, you will save a lot of money by making your own coop.

Check out these detailed steps on how to build a chicken coop in your backyard without hassle! You can make a high quality coop by using the recommended materials and following the procedure for this project.

What You Will Need

Before you start building the coop, gather the following materials that you will need.

  • Wood
  • Saw
  • Nails
  • Plywood
  • Door latch
  • Screws
  • Chicken wire
  • Wood stapler and staple wire
  • Hinge
  • 4 wooden posts, about 6 feet long each

Planning For The Site

After you have gathered the tools and materials, choose the ideal site for the coop. The following tips can help you decide on the best location.

1. The coop should receive plenty of sunlight, so the hens can lay good quality eggs consistently. A good location will also give you big savings on your electricity bills. You will no longer have to use electrical lamps for warmth and light.

2. Keep the chicken coop far from predators. Make sure that garbage cans are not located near the backyard coop, so pests will not linger in the area.

3. Place the coop in a shady location, particularly when you live in a rainy or extremely hot area. A shady place will also protect the coop from wear and tear due to frequent rains. This location is also ideal when there are strong gusts of wind.

Building The Chicken Coop

1. Determine the size of the coop. For instance, an average-sized hen will need about 2 square feet for the total floor area.

2. Plan the design for the coop. You can also check out a blueprint from various online resources. Keep in mind that the coop should come with a large door, so you can collect the eggs easily. In addition, you should opt for a single-level coop, for convenience in keeping the house clean.

3. Mark the desired measurement on the wood, and cut all of the pieces with a wood saw. Place the four pieces of wood on the ground to form a rectangle. Then, connect each by using a screw. This portion will serve as the base of the coop. On each corner, place a post at about 45-degree angle to create a triangular frame. Make sure that the posts are about 6 feet in length.

4. Connect the end portion of the triangular frames with a piece of wood. This will give you a tent-like structure with a triangular shape at both ends. Decide where you want to position the door, and use wood and nails to create a doorframe. Attach the frame inside one of the triangles by using screws or nails.

5. Cover the exterior portion of the coop with chicken wire. You can secure the wire by using a wood stapler. Check all sides of the coop to make sure that the chicken wire is stapled properly.

6. Measure a piece of plywood, which should be about 1/4 inch smaller than the door frame. Cut the wood and attach it to the door frame by using a hinge. Add a bolt latch on both sides of the door to keep it secured.

With these simple tips, you can make a sturdy backyard chicken coop in a matter of minutes. Even with basic carpentry skills, you can come up with the best coop that will keep your chicken safe and secure at all times.
